Week 34!

Happy Tuesday 1A families,

I hope that you enjoyed this nice, long weekend with your families! As we return, we are working hard to finish the year strong!

Announcements
Spring Concert: Our Spring Concert is quickly approaching! It will be at Higley Center for the Performing Arts on May 1st.  Students’ attire for our performances is NOT school uniform. Gentlemen are expected to wear a white dress shirt, black pants, black socks and black closed toed shoes. Solid dark colored vests and ties are optional for gentlemen. Ladies are expected to wear a white top, black skirt and black closed toed shoes. Please have your 1st graders at Higley Center for the Performing Arts by 5:00pm. THANK YOU to Mrs. Nicole Burns for putting on a concert clothing exchange. She has collected concert attire from students who have outgrown their concert clothes. If you would like to participate in the exchange by either donating concert uniforms or receiving articles of clothing, please contact Nicole at: nikki.burns@hotmail.com

Nightly: Read for 15 minutes, practice poem (1 minute), practice rocket math (1 minute)

Thursday: Review words and phonogram for spelling test and Test B

Academics
Poem: Rope Rhyme by Eloise Greenfield Idiom: Land of Nod
Spalding: We will have 20 words this week due to having no school on Monday and the Spelling Test will be on Friday!
Tuesday: fly, forest, freeze, gentle, grow, holes, hotel, iron, live, living 
Wednesday: monkey, myself, notice, pencil, pie, pull, sew, sow, so ,steam

Phonograms: ee, ow, oo, ew, ui, ie, ei, igh, oa, o

Writing: Copy work and narration exercises will be from The Jataka Tales by W.H.D. Rouse, The Giant Crab and Other Tales from Old India by W.H.D. Rouse, and The Sandpiper by Celia Thaxter.

Grammar: This week we will be learning about transition words. Students will learn that transition words are used to help connect ideas, sentences, and events together so that a story can be told. Transition words help stories have a clear beginning, middle, and end. We will practice using and identifying transition words in sentences.

Literature: We will read chapters 4-5 in my Father’s Dragon as we retell and respond to what we have read.

Math: We will continue to explore numbers 1-100 as we identify 1 more, 1 less, 10 more and 10 less.  We will also work to manipulate numbers into various parts and order the numbers from greatest to least and least to greatest.

History: We will begin our westward expansion unit.  Students will learn about Daniel Boone, The Louisiana Purchase and the Louis and Clark expedition.

Science: This week we will continue our exploration in to the solar system. We will be studying Mars and Jupiter this week. We will compare and contrast Mars and Jupiter to see how a day on their planet might be like in terms of time, temperature, size, and weather.
