Week 28!

We are excited to welcome a new month and a new virtue, perseverance! This is a favorite in first grade because we have so many opportunities to practice it.  Please take this opportunity to chat with your child about when and how to utilize perseverance. With one more week left in the third quarter, we will persevere to spring break!

Homework

Nightly: Read for 15 minutes, practice poem (1 minute), practice rocket math (1 minute) Phonograms to practice: wh, w, th, ea, ee, ey, ch, h, or, ar

Wednesday: Review all 20 words and test B

Thursday: WB pg. 84-85

Friday: No homework; have a wonderful spring break!

Academics

Poem: Sing a Song of People by Lois Lenski  Idiom: A.M. & P.M.

Spalding: Due to the field trip on Friday, we will only have 20 words this week and our Spelling Test will be on Thursday!

Monday: before, know, no, were, where, there, here, dead, leave, early

Tuesday: close, close, flower, flour, nothing, ground, lead, led, lead, such

Phonograms: wh, w, th, ea, ee, ey, ch, h, or, ar

Writing: Copy work and narration exercises will be from How to Eat Fried Worms by Thomas Rockwell and The Happy Hollisters by Jerry West. We will also review abbreviations.

Grammar: Students will be assessed on all 70 phonograms throughout the week. We will also practice writing complete sentences (capital letter, punctuation mark, noun, verb) both prompted from the board and unprompted with only a topic and/or question given.

Math: We will continue to work with equal groups as we turn them into multiplication equations.  It is common for this new skill to be confused with addition (i.e. a student writing 3X4=7). Please take the time to show your child the differences. This is a great time to use manipulatives at home!

Literature:  We will finish reading Sam the Minuteman.  This selection is historical fiction and takes place during the battle of Lexington and Concord.  Some mature topics regarding war, injury from battle and death are briefly mentioned.   We encourage families to read and review these topics with their children.  Thank you!

History: This week we will learn about slaves and the Puritan colonies.  After the break we will do a review and take an assessment.

Science: This week we will start a new unit in science! We will be learning all about rocks and their different forms including sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous.
