Week 19


Only a few days left before winter break but they are filled with many exciting activities.  Please see the announcements below for some important info before we head off for break!  I will be sure to post one last blog post with pictures from our world religions party before we close out 2018.  We're almost there!

Homework
Nightly: Read for 15 minutes, practice poem (1 minute), practice rocket math (1 minute)
*Poetry recitation on Monday! 
Monday: Phonogram practice sheet and wkbk pg.171-174
Tuesday:  Wkbk pg. 175-178
Wednesday: No homework. Have a wonderful winter break!

Announcements
Class Book Exchange: During our world religions celebration on December 19th, we will have a class book exchange. Please have your child bring a wrapped book (used or new) and will receive a new (to them) book in return!
Desk Cleaning: As we prepare for the new year, our wonderful cleaning crew will be cleaning the insides of desks.  Please have your child bring a 2 plastic grocery bags (to double) or a sturdy canvas bag to hold their desk supplies during winter break.
Thank you!: Thank you to all who took the time to complete the homework survey.  We appreciate your feedback!
Lost and Found: The lost and found will be cleared out over break. Please stop by the MPR for any missing sweaters, water bottles, etc.
Book Bags: Book bags will not be sent home this week.  Although there is not assigned homework, break is a great time for some free reading!

Academics
Poem: Table Manners by Gelett Burgess- Recitations on Monday and Tuesday

Idiom: The More The Merrier!

Spalding: This week we will not have spelling words. Students will be assessed on all 70 phonograms, half on Monday and half on Tuesday.
Please make sure to practice the phonograms over the weekend and on Monday night in preparation. Practice sheets will be sent home on Friday, 12/14 and on Monday, 12/17.
There will be no book bags sent home this week.
There will be no grammar/writing this week due to the half days.

Math: On Monday, we will practice our sorting and graphing skills with jelly beans.  On Tuesday, we will build a snowflake with various shapes.  We will also take part in various holiday math games.

Literature:  We will conclude our Frog and Toad book series by making a Toad puppet to remember all of his adventures with Frog. We will also read the African American folktale “Brer Rabbit Gets Brer Fox’s Dinner”.

History: This week we will be finishing up our Mexico unit with a review, a story and a craft! 


Science: This week we will conduct a holiday themed science experiment and practice following the steps of the scientific method. We will make a hypothesis and observe what happens when candy canes are placed in different liquids such as water, salt water, and vinegar.
